Spending the Perfect Witchy Day in Edinburgh
Edinburgh and witches? What a magically perfect combination! So the other day I decided to take myself out on a witchy solo date in Edinburgh and had the absolute best time. I thought it would be nice to put together a little witchy itinerary for those who might be interested in adding something like this to their Edinburgh visit.
Apologies to the Harry Potter fans out there but you will find no Harry Potter stops on this itinerary. You will however be guaranteed to have a magically good time, see some authentically witchy locations, enjoy places that you may not find on other Edinburgh itineraries, and, mostly, be checking out some less touristy sights with the exception of maybe one of these.
I did this itinerary in one day walking and while it was long, it was a great way to see the city and you can also stop for food and coffees along the way! So let's get into 9 of my favourite stops for a witchy day in Edinburgh.
The Magical Itinerary
Stop #1 - St. Bernard's Well
Our first witchy stop is going to be St. Bernard's Well. St. Bernard's Well is a historic, decorative spring well located along the stunning Water of Leith Walkway, nestled in the stretch of walkway just past Dean Village. Built in 1789, it features a Greco-Roman-style temple structure with elegant columns and a statue of the Roman goddess of health, Hygeia, at its center. Known for its mineral-rich waters, residents once believed them to have natural healing powers. This made the well a popular destination for visitors seeking to benefit from its magical waters. Even though this was put to a stop in the 1940's due to the water containing arsenic and other impurities, when you put together a greek goddess, natural waters, belief of healing properties and stunning nature you get witchy stop in my book.
Stop #2 - St. Cuthbert's Kirkyard
Second stop, St. Cuthbert's Kirkyard and an absolute favourite spot of mine. St. Cuthbert’s Kirkyard is a historic graveyard surrounding St. Cuthbert’s Church located on the western end of Princes Street Gardens. It is one of Edinburgh's oldest graveyard's, dating back to the medieval period. Here you'll find graves spanning several centuries. There are ornate tombstones, mausoleums, and impressive monuments, adding to the beauty. Not to mention set against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Surrounded by two bustling streets, the grounds are a peaceful stunning little oasis and are a must visit.
Stop #3 - Fool
After St. Cuthbert's Kirk we venture very very dar down the road to the neighbourhood of Morningside to pay a visit to Fool. This little gem has a wonderfully curated selection of card decks, witch centric books, jewelry, crystals, unique gifts, and quirky lifestyle items, the shop offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and vintage-inspired pieces, often with a playful, artistic twist. It’s a favorite local spot for those seeking distinctive decor and thoughtful, creative gifts.
Stop #4 - The Wheel of Fate
Next up we are walking across the Meadows from Morningside to another occult shop gem, The Wheel of Fate. This shop has a wonderful selection of mystical supplies and esoteric items. It offers a a variety of card decks, crystals, candles, besoms, books, and various other spiritual tools. The star Known for its welcoming and knowledgeable atmosphere, the shop is a haven for both beginners and seasoned practitioners seeking guidance and unique, magical items.
Stop #5 - Greyfriars Kirkyard
Now we are off to arguably one of the most famous spots in Edinburgh and the one spot that will definitely have some tourists, Greyfriars Kirkyard located in Edinburgh's Old Town. Established in the 16th century, it’s famous for its atmospheric setting, elaborate tombstones, historical connections, including the legend of Greyfriars Bobby which is one of my favourite Edinburgh stories, and of course being incredibly haunted. Some say the most haunted graveyard in the world. I highly recommend doing one of the Ghost Tours that goes through, you won't be disappointed.
Stop #6 - Black Moon Botanica
Next we will find ourselves walking just down Candlemaker Row a few steps towards Black Moon Botanical. Black Moon is one of my favourite shops in Edinburgh and you will often find it with a line down the block waiting to get inside. The shop has some amazing things on offer including the shops own brand of handmade candles and perfume oils (saying I am obsessed with their perfume oils would not be an understatement lol). They also have a plethora of occult items on offer including a beautifully curated selection of crystals, card decks, herbs, artwork, books, soaps, and more. And the atmosphere is a total vibe. You won't want to miss this one.
Stop #7 - The Witches' Well
For our 7th stop we will take a break from shopping and head up towards Edinburgh Castle to The Witches' Well. This historic landmark is located on the edge of Edinburgh's Grassmarket, and commemorates the many individuals executed for witchcraft during the 16th and 17th centuries. The well features an ornate stone structure and a plaque honouring the victims of these tragic events. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, it serves as a poignant reminder of the city's dark past and is a popular stop for visitors interested in Edinburgh's witchcraft history.
Stop #8 - The Museum of Magic, Fortunetelling, and Witchcraft
Making our way now down the Royal Mile to The Museum of Magic, Fortunetelling, and Witchcraft. This small and recently opened museum is a unique attraction that explores the rich history of magic and the occult. It features a collection of artifacts related to fortune-telling, witchcraft, and supernatural practices, providing insights into the beliefs and rituals of the past. There are exhibits on tarot, astrology, different magical and spiritual practices, and the historicwitch trials. They also offer readings at certain times. It's a modest museum that is clearly still finding its footing but certainly worth a visit.
Stop #9 - The Wyrd Shop
Our final occult shop stop on the journey is The Wyrd Shop located further along the Royal Mile. The Ward Shop is the oldest occult shop in Edinburgh and is a beloved destination whether you are a new practitioner to the craft or well seasoned. They offer a wide range of mystical and esoteric products with an incredibly welcoming and whimsical vibe. Another one that is a staple stop for me when I am in the city. They have a wonderful selection of books, card decks, home decor, witchy gifts, and some of the best faerie statues you will find in Edinburgh. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. A place where you will feel most welcome and right at home.
