Embarking on a journey as a vegan can be super exciting as you look forward to trying new vegan eats and having an enriching experience filled with delicious plant-based discoveries and opportunities to support ethical and sustainable practices around the globe. However, navigating unfamiliar destinations while adhering to a vegan lifestyle also comes with challenges. Fear not, fellow vegans and plant-based enthusiasts! In this blog post, we're going to talk about ten invaluable tips to help you travel with ease, confidence, and compassion.

Top 10 Simple Vegan Travel Tips

1. Research, Research, Research: This is the first thing I research for any trip, before attractions or even accommodations. Before you jet off to your destination, take the time to research vegan-friendly eateries, markets, and grocery stores in the area. Websites and apps like HappyCow, Yelp, and TripAdvisor can be invaluable resources for finding vegan-friendly establishments and reading reviews from fellow travelers. Additionally, reach out to local vegan communities or social media groups for insider tips and recommendations. If you do just one of these tips, make it this one.

2. Pack Vegan Essentials: To ensure you have access to vegan options wherever your travels may take you, pack a stash of vegan essentials in your luggage. This may include non-perishable snacks like nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and energy bars, as well as travel-friendly staples like instant oatmeal, nut butter, and plant-based protein powder. Don't forget to pack a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and a set of eco-friendly utensils to minimize waste while on the go.

3. Communicate Your Dietary Needs: Don't be shy. When dining out or booking accommodations, don't hesitate to communicate your dietary preferences and restrictions to restaurant staff, chefs, and hotel staff. Most establishments are happy to accommodate vegan requests and may even be able to prepare off-menu options or modify existing dishes to suit your needs especially if you let them know in advance. It can be really valuable to learn a few key phrases in the local language of the place you will be visiting, such as "I am vegan" or "Does this contain dairy or eggs?" can also be helpful in ensuring clear communication. Always be sure to ask questions so you are comfortable with the places you will be eating.

4. Embrace Local Cuisine: One of the joys of traveling as a vegan is discovering and indulging in the diverse array of plant-based cuisines from around the world. Embrace the opportunity to sample traditional dishes made with locally-sourced fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations from locals or fellow travelers. Be adventurous and open-minded, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the culinary delights awaiting you. If you want some vegan friendly city inspiration, you can also check out this post HERE.

5. Be Flexible and Creative: While it's important to advocate for your dietary preferences, it's also essential to be flexible and adaptable when faced with limited options or language barriers. This can happen especially when travelling in a lot of smaller or off the beaten path towns and villages. Get creative with substitutions and modifications, and don't be afraid to assemble a meal from side dishes or appetizers if there are no vegan entrees available. Side dishes can honestly be such a fun way to put a meal together and sometimes have incredible options to choose from. Remember that a little ingenuity goes a long way, and you may discover some delicious combinations you wouldn't have tried otherwise.

6. Plan Ahead for Air Travel: We've all heard the airplane vegan horror stories lol. One of my fears of travelling is being hungry on a Long flight lol. Sounds silly but its seriously something I always prepare for so it doesn't happen. Airports and airplanes can be challenging environments for vegans, with limited, or sometimes no, food options and often with long periods of time between meals. To ensure you have vegan-friendly options during your journey, pack a hearty meal or snacks to enjoy onboard, such as sandwiches, wraps, salads, or fruit. Many airports now offer vegan-friendly dining options, so be sure to scope out your terminal ahead of time and plan accordingly. I always research the terminal for food and coffee options that I can bring on the plane with me and I of course always have travel friendly snacks. I don't bring food from home to often because I have had things taken away from me but depending on where you are going preparing something at home is a very economical option as well.

7. Seek Out Vegan-Friendly Accommodations: When booking accommodations, opt for vegan-friendly hotels, hostels, or guesthouses that offer plant-based menu options and eco-friendly amenities. I do this for a couple of reasons, one I always try to support sustainable accommodations and having vegan options is a big win and two if breakfast is included I want to be sure there is actually something I can eat that isn't just a piece of fruit. Websites like VegVisits and Airbnb often feature vegan-friendly listings with vegan hosts who can provide insider tips and recommendations for vegan dining and activities in the area. Happy Cow can also be a good resource here. Staying in accommodations that share your values will enhance your travel experience and support businesses that prioritize sustainability and compassion which is always a sustainable travel goal.

8. Explore Local Markets and Grocery Stores: One of the best ways to experience the local culture and cuisine is by visiting bustling markets and grocery stores teeming with fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices. Book an accommodation with a little kitchen space and take the opportunity to stock up on vegan staples and ingredients to prepare your own meals or snacks before leaving for your day out. Also don't hesitate to ask vendors for recommendations or recipe ideas. Not only will you save money by cooking your own meals, but you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what goes into your food without any stress.

9. Connect with Like-Minded Travelers: Traveling as a vegan can be even more enjoyable when you connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for plant-based living. Join vegan travel groups or online communities, attend vegan meetups or events, and seek out vegan-friendly tours and activities where you can meet fellow travelers with similar interests. Sharing experiences, tips, and recommendations with others can enrich your travel experience and foster new friendships along the way. There are even fully vegan group tours and vacations you can book now if that sounds like your jam. A quick Google search can show you tons of possible options.

10. Practice Compassion and Gratitude: Above all, remember to practice compassion and gratitude throughout your travels, both towards yourself and others. Be patient and understanding with yourself as you navigate new culinary experiences and cultural differences, and approach each interaction with kindness and respect. Express gratitude to restaurant staff, chefs, and hosts who go out of their way to accommodate your dietary needs, and savour each moment of connection, discovery, and delicious vegan cuisine. In some areas, especially remote ones, being vegan isn't really a thing yet so have patience and be understanding towards the local people and their culture as well. People are generally understanding and more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions.
